Adding a watermark to a PDF takes about thirty seconds once you know the right tool. Whether you need to stamp "CONFIDENTIAL" across a contract, mark a document as "DRAFT" before review, or brand pages with your company name, a text watermark does the job cleanly.
What Is a PDF Watermark?
A watermark is semi-transparent text printed diagonally across every page of a document. It sits on top of the existing content without covering it — readers can still read the document normally, but the watermark is clearly visible.
Common uses:
- CONFIDENTIAL — mark sensitive internal documents before sharing
- DRAFT — signal that a document is not the final version
- SAMPLE — prevent misuse of preview documents
- Company name — brand documents sent to clients
- DO NOT COPY — discourage unauthorised reproduction
How to Add a Watermark to a PDF on TryMyPdf
- Go to the Watermark PDF tool — Open TryMyPdf Watermark PDF in your browser. No account needed.
- Upload your PDF — Drag your file into the upload area or click to browse. Files up to 20MB supported.
- Type your watermark text — Enter whatever you want stamped across the pages: "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", your company name, or any custom text.
- Set opacity and size — Adjust how visible the watermark appears. A 30–40% opacity is readable without overwhelming the content.
- Click "Add Watermark" — The tool stamps the text diagonally across every page.
- Download — Your watermarked PDF downloads immediately.
Tips for Better Watermarks
Keep it short — Long watermark text gets cut off at the page edges. Stick to one or two words for clean results.
Use ALL CAPS — CONFIDENTIAL reads more authoritatively than Confidential. Capital letters also make the watermark more visible at lower opacity.
Match the purpose to the opacity — Internal review drafts can use 20–30% opacity (subtle but present). Documents you want clearly marked as restricted should use 40–60%.
One watermark per document — If you need different watermarks on different sections, split the PDF first, watermark each section, then merge them back.
Can a Watermark Be Removed?
A standard text watermark added to a PDF can technically be removed by someone with advanced PDF editing software. If you need true tamper-proof protection, a watermark alone is not sufficient — combine it with PDF password protection using Protect PDF.
For most practical purposes — marking internal drafts, sending previews to clients, flagging confidential reports — a visible watermark is a strong enough deterrent.
Remove a Watermark
If you received a document with a watermark that you have legitimate permission to remove, that requires a PDF editor. TryMyPdf currently adds watermarks but does not remove them.
