Frequently Asked Questions
What page range format should I use?+
Enter ranges like "1-5" to get pages 1 through 5, individual pages like "3, 7, 12", or combinations like "1-3, 5, 8-10".
Will splitting reduce the quality of extracted pages?+
No. Page extraction is a structural operation — the content, fonts, images, and layout of extracted pages are completely unchanged.
What's the difference between Split and Delete Pages?+
Split extracts a specific range and discards everything else. Delete Pages keeps most of the document and removes a few specific pages. Use Split when you only want a section of a larger file.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?+
No. Unlock the PDF first using our Unlock PDF tool, then split it.
Is there a limit on how many pages I can extract?+
You can extract any number of pages as long as the input file is under the 20MB upload limit.
Need to keep most of the PDF and remove a few pages instead? Delete specific pages is a faster approach.
What is Split PDF?
Splitting a PDF — also called page extraction — creates a new standalone PDF containing only the pages you specified from the original document. The source file is never modified. This differs from deleting pages: Split PDF gives you a subset of the document while Delete Pages removes a subset and keeps the rest.
When should you use it?
Use Split PDF when you need to share only a specific section or chapter of a larger document, extract a single signed page from a contract, pull out an invoice embedded on page 14 of a 50-page statement, or isolate a specific data table to share separately. It is faster than printing and re-scanning the pages you need.
How Split PDF works under the hood
TryMyPdf's split engine parses the PDF's page tree and cross-reference table to identify the precise byte offsets of the requested pages. Those pages are copied into a new PDF along with their referenced fonts, images, and resources — nothing is re-rendered. The result is a clean, lightweight PDF containing exactly the pages you requested, indistinguishable in quality from the original.
Common use cases for Split PDF
Extract a Single Invoice
Pull a specific invoice or purchase order out of a bundled monthly statement without sending the entire document.
Share One Chapter
Extract a single chapter from a textbook, training manual, or research paper to share with specific readers.
Isolate Signed Pages
Extract only the signature pages from a multi-page contract for record-keeping or email confirmation.
Separate Annexures
Pull appendices, exhibits, or supporting documents from a main report so they can be distributed individually.
Create Sample Previews
Extract the first few pages of a document to create a free sample or preview version for limited distribution.
Reduce File Size by Scope
Extract only the pages you actually need from a large document to create a smaller, more focused file for sharing.
Split eBook Chapters
Divide a complete training manual or eBook into individual chapter PDFs for modular distribution to different audiences.
Portfolio Page Selection
Extract specific project pages from a large portfolio PDF to send targeted work samples to different clients or employers.
Tips for best results
Use Delete Pages for the inverse task
If you want to keep most of the document and remove just a few pages, Delete Pages is faster — you only specify what to remove rather than all the pages to keep.
Unlock before splitting
Password-protected or owner-restricted PDFs cannot be processed. Use the Unlock PDF tool first, then split the file.
Combine with Merge for reordering
To reorder pages within a large PDF, split it into individual sections and merge them back in the desired order using the Merge PDF tool.
Compress after extraction
The extracted PDF may still carry over some resource overhead from the original file. Running it through Compress PDF can reduce its size further.
